The Garden!

The garden we had this year was very small, and only had the basics for my kitchen in it.  The military transferred us right in the middle of prime planting season.  Between two kids, a husband, and household stuff there was no way i could plant a big garden. The good news is this year I will have plenty of time to prepare.

I love having the ability to run out to the garden, and grab something for dinner.  It really is fun for me, and my two year old loves to go out with me.  As the end of garden season for area is coming to an end I am making up all kinds of things to freeze, can, or dry for the winter.  In a previous blog I made Pesto to store in the freezer.  My family loves pesto sauces, and really do not think that the batch I made will last us very long.  I will however hold off on using it until I just can not stand it any more.

I have been daydreaming of the things I can plant next year.  There are so many things I want to plant. However there is only so much room.  I am trying to convince my hubby to make me a raised bed for more space.

Things I know I will plant.
  • tomatoes
  • bell peppers
  • jalapenos
  • spicy basil
  • oregano
  • thyme
  • rosemary
  • black eyed peas
Things I want to plant
  • garlic
  • onions
  • eggplant
  • squash
  • okra
  • maybe some mint for a few mojitos
Do you ever think of planting a garden?  What would you plant?  What are your favorite vegetables and herbs? Not sure you have the time. Just plant some herbs in pots, and place them near the door you typically leave the house from.  On your way out take a pitcher of water for the plants, and leave the pitcher on the porch.  Then just take the pitcher back inside with you on your way in.

we are going on an entire year at trying to grow veggies on our 5 acres of land ... that's riddled with limestone. Built us some raised beds and right now, here in North Central Florida, the carrots are slowly poking out of the ground, the squash stems are getting thicker, the green beans may or may not make it due to planting late & you have a new follower via email. :)

I've been wanting to plant a garden for a long time now. I would plant bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and a bunch of herbs. Have you ever tried growing potatoes? We love potatoes, but I am not sure how hard they are to grow. I'd also like to grow some fruit. I really wish I had an apple tree!

I also wanted to let you know that you are one of the bloggers that I have passed the Versatile Blogger award to. Please stop by my blog to "pick it up." :)

To Julie: Glad you got some raised beds so that you could get the garden started. I wish we had the growing season of Florida here. I am originally from Texas where there is also a long growing season. Have fun with your garden.

To Lacey: We did grow potatoes when I was little. They were fairly easy to grow, but they take quite a bit of space. I think I read on the internet about growing them in 5 gallon buckets. You could google that if you were interested. When we move after my hubby gets out of the Navy I might plant some fruit trees, but for now I would never see them get to produce anything. Thanks for the award I will swing by to get it soon.

I grew up with a HUGE garden (and I Mean HUGE, about 1/3 acre worth) so I've been missing it alot! This year I got to plant my very first garden all of my own! We created the garden from a grass plot...SO not fun to do...we keep getting grass growing in there; I have a feeling it will be a couple years yet until we can stop getting the grass coming back. But this year we planted Corn, Carrots, Radishes, Peas, Tomatoes, Raspberries, Rhubarb, Pumpkins, Cucumbers, Strawberries, Red Bell Peppers, Jalepeneo Pepper, and Cauliflower. Sounds great right? Sadly only the tomatoes, cauliflower, peppers, 1 pumpkin plant, 1 TINY rhubarb Plant and a few strawberry and Raspberry plants actually grew. (due to weather our garden was planted really late this year) So hopefully next year I will be able to plant all the above and more and have better luck next year!

    I really LOVE gardens!
